

The purpose of Competitive Graduate Awards (CGA) is to support highly qualified new graduate students who are accepted into masters degree programs at SIUE.
The below information reflects significant changes to the CGA application and award structure effective August 1, 2024, for the 2025-2026 award period. Recipients of the award for the 2024-2025 year can view the prior award structure detailed in the previous version of this website applicable to their awards.
CGAs are granted for the nine-month academic year (fall and spring semesters). Recipients of the CGA are awarded a Research Assistantship (RA) position to conduct research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. The RA position will be awarded at the 25% level, which includes an average of 10 hours per week devoted to research activities. The RA position provides significant benefits, including:
As Research Assistants, all Graduate Assistantship eligibility requirements, policies, and procedures apply to CGA recipients. Since the CGA Research Assistantship is a 25% position, CGA recipients ARE eligible to accept a second Graduate Assistantship position at a level of 25% or below.
Prospective students who meet all of the below eligibility criteria and deadlines will receive an email invitation to apply for the Competitive Graduate Award.
All applicants who meet the criteria and receive an application invitation are encouraged to apply.
The CGA application must be submitted and completed through the SIUE Application Center. Only invited applicants will be able to access the CGA application in the application portal. Invitations to apply will be sent via the email used to register in the application portal.

The general timeline for award application, review and notification is as follows.

| January 15 | Deadline for invited applicants to have completed CGA application on file, including completed recommendation form |
| Late January | Graduate Program Directors complete review of CGA applications and identify faculty mentors for top applicants |
| February | Graduate Student Award Committee reviews CGA applications and recommends awards |
| Early March | The Graduate School notifies departments and applicants by email of the results |
Eligible applications are reviewed by departments and the Graduate Student Awards Faculty Committee on the below criteria according to the CGA Evaluation Rubric:
Competitive applicants will have GPA(s) significantly higher than the minimums required for eligibility, will have engaged in research/creative activities as an undergraduate student, and will have well-articulated ideas on potential research/creative activities that will enhance their graduate education.
Recipients of Competitive Graduate Awards:
If a recipient fails to comply with these conditions, the Graduate School may revoke the award.
